私は外国語を学ぶのが大好きです　　　　    I love learning/ foreign languages.//
語学が好きすぎて ２年おきに新しい言語を学ぶほどで 今は８個目に取り組んでいます　　　　    In fact,/ I love it so much/ that I like to learn/ a new language/ every two years,/ currently/ working on my eighth one.//
そんな私が必ず聞かれる質問はこれです 「どんな方法で？ 秘訣は？」　　　　    When people find/ that out/ about me,/ they always ask me,/ "How do you do that?// What's your secret?"//
正直なところ 長年の間 私の答えはこうでした 「さあね 言語を学ぶのが 大好きなだけだよ」　　　　    And to be honest,/ for many years,/ my answer would be,/ "I don't know.// I simply love learning/ languages."//
でも 納得してもらえませんでした　　　　    But people were never happy/ with that answer.//
何年かけて学んでも ひとつの言語でさえ 流暢に話せないのに 私が次々に言語を習得できるのは なぜなんだ と　　　　    They wanted to know/ why they are spending years/ trying to learn/ even one language,/ never/ achieving fluency,/ and here/ I come,/ learning one language/ after another.//
多くの言語を操る 「ポリグロット」の秘密を 知りたがったのです　　　　    They wanted to know/ the secret of polyglots,/ people/ who speak a lot of languages.//
そこで 私も思いました 他のポリグロットは どう学習してるんだろう？と　　　　    And that made me/ wonder,/ too,/ how do actually/ other polyglots do it?//
私たちに共通点はあるのか？　　　　    What do we have in common?//
そして他の人々より ずっと速く言語を 学習できるのは なぜか？　　　　    And what is it/ that enables us/ to learn languages so much faster/ than other people?//
同じような人たちに会って 調べてみることにしました　　　　    I decided to meet/ other people/ like me/ and find that out.//
多くのポリグロットに会う 絶好の機会は 何百人もの言語好きが 一堂に会して 言語を練習するイベントです　　　　    The best place to meet a lot of polyglots is an event/ where hundreds of language lovers meet in one place/ to practice their languages.//
こうしたイベントは 世界各地で行なわれており 私も参加して 他の人たちの学習方法を 聞くことにしました　　　　    There are several such polyglot events organized all/ around the world,/ and so I decided to go there/ and ask polyglots/ about the methods/ that they use.//
アイルランド出身のベニーは 「学習初日から話す」という方法を 教えてくれました　　　　    And so/ I met Benny/ from Ireland,/ who told me/ that his method is to start speaking from day one.//
トラベル会話帳で いくつかのフレーズを覚えたら ネイティブスピーカーに 会いに行って すぐに会話を始めるのだそうです　　　　    He learns a few phrases/ from a travel phrasebook/ and goes to meet/ native speakers/ and starts having/ conversations/ with them right away.//
１日に200回 間違おうと 気にしません 相手の反応から学ぶのが 彼のやり方なのです　　　　    He doesn't mind making/ even 200 mistakes/ a day,/ because that's/ how he learns,/ based/ on the feedback.//
最大の利点は 今や 頻繁に旅に出なくてもいいことです ウェブサイトを使えば 自宅の居間でくつろぎながら 簡単にネイティブスピーカーと 会話できるのですから　　　　    And the best thing is,/ he doesn't even need to travel/ a lot/ today,/ because you can easily have conversations/ with native speakers/ from the comfort of your living room,/ using websites.//
ブラジル出身のルーカスは とても興味深い方法で ロシア語を学んでいました　　　　    I also met Lucas/ from Brazil/ who had a really interesting method/ to learn Russian.//
無作為に100人のロシア語話者を Skypeで友だちに追加して そのうちの１人と チャットを始めるそうです ロシア語で「やあ」と書くと　　　　    He simply added a hundred random Russian speakers/ on Skype/ as friends,/ and then/ he opened a chat window/ with one of them/ and wrote "Hi"/ in Russian.//
相手は「やあ 元気？」と 返してきます　　　　    And the person replied,/ "Hi,/ how are you?"//
ルーカスはこれをコピーして 別の人とのチャットに貼り付けます その相手は「元気だよ ありがとう あなたは？」と返します　　　　    Lucas copied this/ and put it/ into a text window/ with another person,/ and the person replied,/ "I'm fine,/ thank you,/ and how are you?"//
ルーカスはこの答えを 最初の相手に送信します そうやって 本人たちも知らぬ間に 見知らぬ者同士の会話を 取り持つわけです　　　　    Lucas copied this back/ to the first person,/ and in this way,/ he had/ two strangers have a conversation/ with each other/ without knowing about it.//
こうした会話を繰り返すうちに ロシア語での会話の始め方が 見えてきて すぐに 自分で使えるようになります　　　　    And soon/ he would start typing/ himself,/ because he had so many of these conversations/ that he figured out/ how the Russian conversation usually starts.//
見事な方法でしょ？　　　　    What an ingenious method,/ right?//
「発音の真似から入る」と言う ポリグロットにも出会いました 頻出の500語を必ず覚える人や まず文法書を読むという人もいました　　　　    And then/ I met polyglots/ who always start by imitating sounds of the language,/ and others/ who always learn the 500 most frequent words of the language,/ and yet others/ who always start by reading about the grammar.//
100人のポリグロットに聞けば 100通りの学習方法が 返ってきたでしょう　　　　    If I asked a hundred different polyglots,/ I heard a hundred different approaches/ to learning languages.//
学習方法は皆それぞれ違うのに 結果は同じで 全員いくつかの言語を 流暢に話せるようになるのです　　　　    Everybody seems to have/ a unique way/ they learn a language,/ and yet/ we/ all come to the same result of speaking several languages fluently.//
彼らの学習方法に耳を傾けるうちに 突然 ピンと来ました 私たち全員には共通点が ひとつあったんです それは言語を学ぶ過程の 楽しみ方を知っていること　　　　    And/ as I was listening to these polyglots/ telling me/ about their methods,/ it suddenly dawned on me:/ the one thing/ we/ all have in common is/ that we simply found ways/ to enjoy the language-learning process.//
ポリグロットは皆 言語の学習について さも楽しそうに語ります　　　　    All of these polyglots were talking about language learning/ as if it was great fun.//
顔を輝かせて カラフルな文法の一覧表や 丁寧に手作りされた フラッシュカードや アプリでの語彙の学習に関する データを見せてくれます 外国語のレシピで料理することへの 愛を語る人もいます　　　　    You should have seen their faces/ when they were showing me/ their colorful grammar charts/ and their carefully handmade flash cards,/ and their statistics/ about learning vocabulary/ using apps,/ or even/ how they love to cook/ based/ on recipes/ in a foreign language.//
方法はバラバラですが どれも必ず自分が 楽しめるものにしてあるのです　　　　    All of them use different methods,/ but they always make sure/ it's something/ that they personally enjoy.//
思えば 私自身も そうやって言語を学んでいました　　　　    I realized/ that this is actually/ how I learn languages/ myself.//
スペイン語の勉強中 教科書の文章に うんざりしました　　　　    When I was learning Spanish,/ I was bored with the text/ in the textbook.//
「ホセが駅までの道順を尋ねる」とか どうでもいいでしょう？　　　　    I mean,/ who wants to read/ about Jose/ asking about the directions/ to the train station.// Right?//
それより『ハリー・ポッター』を 読みたいと思いました 子供の頃 大好きだった本で 何度も読み返していたからです　　　　    I wanted to read/ "Harry Potter"/ instead,/ because that was my favorite book/ as a child,/ and I have read it many times.//
そこで『ハリー・ポッター』の スペイン語訳を読み始めました もちろん 最初は ほとんど何もわかりませんでした それでも大好きな本なので 読み進めたところ 終わる頃には ほぼ問題なく 読めるようになっていました　　　　    So I got the Spanish translation of "Harry Potter"/ and started reading,/ and sure enough,/ I didn't understand almost anything/ at the beginning,/ but I kept on reading/ because I loved the book,/ and by the end of the book,/ I was able to follow it almost/ without any problems.//
ドイツ語の時にも 同じことが起きました　　　　    And the same thing happened/ when I was learning German.//
大好きなドラマ『フレンズ』を ドイツ語で見ることにしたんです 今度も 最初のうちは ちんぷんかんぷんでした　　　　    I decided to watch/ "Friends,/"/ my favorite sitcom,/ in German,/ and again,/ at the beginning/ it was all just gibberish.//
単語の切れ目さえも わからないほどでしたが 毎日見続けられたのは 『フレンズ』だったからです　　　　    I didn't know/ where one word finished/ and another one started,/ but I kept on watching every day/ because it's "Friends."//
どの言語でも楽しめるくらい すごく好きです　　　　    I can watch it/ in any language.// I love it so much.//
シーズンを２つか３つ 見終わる頃には 本当に会話の意味が わかってきたんです　　　　    And after the second or third season,/ seriously,/ the dialogue started to make/ sense.//
これに気づいたのは 他のポリグロットに出会ってからです　　　　    I only realized this/ after meeting other polyglots.//
私たちは天才ではないし 言語習得の近道も知りません　　　　    We are no geniuses/ and we have no shortcut/ to learning languages.//
ただプロセスを楽しむ方法を見つけて 言語の学習を 退屈な学校の科目ではなく 毎日やりたくなる 楽しい活動にしているだけなのです　　　　    We simply found ways/ how to enjoy the process,/ how to turn language learning/ from a boring school subject/ into a pleasant activity/ which you don't mind doing/ every day.//
単語を紙に書き出すのが嫌なら アプリで入力すればいいですし　　　　    If you don't like writing/ words down/ on paper,/ you can always type them/ in an app.//
教科書のつまらない内容を 聞きたくないなら YouTubeやポッドキャストに いろんな言語の面白い番組がありますよ　　　　    If you don't like listening to boring/ textbook material,/ find interesting content/ on YouTube/ or/ in podcasts/ for any language.//
どちらかと言うと内向的で 「ネイティブスピーカーと話すのは ちょっと…」と思うなら 独り言で学習してみてください　　　　    If you're a more introverted person/ and you can't imagine speaking/ to native speakers right away,/ you can apply the method of self-talk.//
気楽な自分の部屋で 自分に話しかけるんです 週末の予定や 一日の出来事を話したり 携帯に保存された写真を 適当に選んで 誰かに説明するつもりに なってみましょう　　　　    You can talk to yourself/ in the comfort of your room,/ describing your plans/ for the weekend,/ how your day has been,/ or even take a random picture/ from your phone/ and describe the picture/ to your imaginary friend.//
ポリグロットは こうして言語を学んでいます 何よりの朗報は 自ら学習を物にする気さえあれば 誰にでもできる方法だということです　　　　    This is/ how polyglots learn languages,/ and the best news is,/ it's available/ to anyone/ who is willing/ to take the learning/ into their own hands.//
他のポリグロットに出会って 言語学習のプロセスに 楽しみを見いだすことが すごく重要だと気づきましたが 楽しいだけでは不十分です　　　　    So meeting other polyglots helped me/ realize/ that it is really crucial/ to find enjoyment/ in the process of learning languages,/ but also/ that joy/ in itself is not enough.//
外国語を流暢に 話せるようになりたいなら さらに３つの原則を 実践しなければなりません　　　　    If you want to achieve/ fluency/ in a foreign language,/ you'll also need to apply/ three more principles.//
まず 効果的な方法が必要です　　　　    First of all,/ you'll need effective methods.//
明日の試験に備えて 単語のリストを覚えようとする場合 単語は短期記憶に 記憶されるため 数日後には忘れてしまいます　　　　    If you try to memorize/ a list of words/ for a test/ tomorrow,/ the words will be stored in your short-term memory/ and you'll forget them/ after a few days.//
長期的に単語を記憶しておきたければ 数日ごとに繰り返し 復習をしなければなりません これは間隔反復と呼ばれます　　　　    If you,/ however,/ want to keep/ words/ long term,/ you need to revise/ them/ in the course of a few days repeatedly using/ the so-called space repetition.//
このやり方にはAnkiや Memriseなどのアプリが使えます ゴールドリスト法で ノートに書き出すのもいいでしょう この方法も多くのポリグロットに 支持されています　　　　    You can use apps/ which are based on this system/ such as Anki or Memrise,/ or you can write lists of word/ in a notebook/ using the Goldlist method,/ which is also very popular/ with many polyglots.//
どんな方法があって どれが有効かわからないなら ポリグロットによる YouTubeやサイトを見て アイデアをもらってください　　　　    If you're not sure/ which methods are effective/ and what is available out there,/ just check out/ polyglots/' YouTube channels and websites/ and get inspiration/ from them.//
他の人に効果があるなら あなたの場合も期待できそうです　　　　    If it works for them,/ it will most probably work/ for you too.//
３つ目の原則は 学習に約束事を取り入れることです　　　　    The third principle to follow is to create a system/ in your learning.//
皆が忙しく暮らす現代では 言語学習の時間は なかなかありません　　　　    We're all very busy/ and no one really has time/ to learn a language today.//
でも 少し先の計画を立てるだけで 時間は作れるんです　　　　    But we can create that time/ if we just plan a bit ahead.//
いつもより15分早く 起きるのはどうでしょう？　　　　    Can you wake up/ 15 minutes earlier/ than you normally do?//
単語を復習するのに ぴったりなはずです　　　　    That would be the perfect time/ to revise some vocabulary.//
通勤の車の中で ポッドキャストを聞くのは？　　　　    Can you listen to a podcast/ on your way/ to work/ while driving?//
リスニングの良い練習に なるでしょう　　　　    Well,/ that would be great/ to get some listening experience.//
特別に時間を割かなくても できることはたくさんあります ポッドキャストを聞くのは 通勤中や 家事をしながらもできます　　　　    There are/ so many things we can do without even planning/ that extra time,/ such as listening to podcasts/ on our way to work/ or doing our household chores.//
大切なのは 学習に計画を組み込むことです　　　　    The important thing is to create a plan/ in the learning.//
「火曜と木曜に 友達と20分間 会話の練習をするぞ」　　　　    I will practice speaking/ every Tuesday and Thursday/ with a friend/ for 20 minutes.//
「朝食を食べながら YouTubeのビデオを見よう」など　　　　    I will listen to a YouTube video/ while having breakfast."//
学習に約束事を作っておけば それは生活の一部になるので 特別に時間を割く必要が なくなります　　　　    If you create a system/ in your learning,/ you don't need to find/ that extra time,/ because it will become a part of your everyday life.//
最後に 流暢に話せるように なりたいなら 少しの辛抱も必要です　　　　    And finally,/ if you want to learn/ a language fluently,/ you need also/ a bit of patience.//
２か月で言語を 習得することはできませんが 目に見える進歩を遂げることは 確実にできます 楽しめる方法で 毎日 少しずつ取り組めばいいのです　　　　    It's not possible/ to learn a language/ within two months,/ but it's definitely possible/ to make a visible improvement/ in two months,/ if you learn in small chunks/ every day/ in a way/ that you enjoy.//
成功体験ほど やる気の出るものはありません　　　　    And there is nothing/ that motivates us/ more/ than our own success.//
『フレンズ』を見ながら 初めてドイツ語のジョークが分かった瞬間を 今でも鮮明に覚えています　　　　    I vividly remember the moment/ when I understood the first joke/ in German/ when watching "Friends."//
あまりの嬉しさに やる気がわいたので その日は さらに２話 視聴しました 見続けるうちに 「分かる」という小さな達成感を どんどん経験しました 徐々に ドイツ語が上達して 自由かつ流暢になんでも 表現できるレベルに達しました　　　　    I was so happy/ and motivated/ that I just kept on watching that day/ two more episodes,/ and/ as I kept watching,/ I had more and more of those moments of understanding,/ these little victories,/ and step/ by step,/ I got to a level/ where I could use the language freely and fluently/ to express anything.//
これは素晴らしい気分です　　　　    This is a wonderful feeling.//
この気持ちを もっと味わいたいから ２年ごとに新しい言語を 学ぶのです　　　　    I can't get enough of that feeling,/ and that's/ why I learn a language/ every two years.//
これがポリグロットの 秘密のすべてです　　　　    So this is the whole polyglot secret.//
体系的に実践できる 効果的な方法を見つけましょう ある程度の時間をかけて 楽しめる方法です こうして ポリグロットは ほんの数か月のうちに言語を習得します　　　　    Find effective methods/ which you can use systematically/ over the period of some time/ in a way/ which you enjoy,/ and this is/ how polyglots learn languages/ within months, not years.//
さて 中には こう思う人もいるでしょう 「言語学習を楽しむのは 大いに結構だけど 実は 君たちポリグロットは 才能のかたまりで ほとんどの人には 才能がないのでは？」と　　　　    Now,/ some of you may be thinking,/ "That's all very nice/ to enjoy language learning,/ but isn't the real secret/ that you polyglots are just super talented/ and most of us aren't?"//
ベニーとルーカスについて お話ししていないことがあります　　　　    Well,/ there's one thing/ I haven't told you/ about Benny and Lucas.//
ベニーはアイルランド・ゲール語を11年 ドイツ語を5年 学校で学びました　　　　    Benny had 11 years of Irish Gaelic and five years of German/ at school.//
卒業するまでに どちらも全く話せませんでした　　　　    He couldn't speak them/ at all/ when graduating.//
彼は21歳になるまで 「語学の遺伝子がないから 外国語が話せない」と 思っていました　　　　    Up/ to the age of 21,/ he thought/ he didn't have the language gene/ and he could not speak another language.//
それから彼は 自分なりの学習法を探し ネイティブスピーカーと話して フィードバックをもらうようになり 今では10もの言語で やすやすと会話をすることができます　　　　    Then/ he started to look/ for his way of learning languages,/ which was speaking to native speakers/ and getting feedback/ from them,/ and today/ Benny can easily have a conversation/ in 10 languages.//
